Day 1 on the snow....

20th Feb, 2008

Hi all,

Well, no broken bones to report, just plenty of aching muscles and weary bodies.

The weather today was just magnificent. Not a cloud in the sky. Unfortunately, they have not had a lot of snow over the past fortnight and the unusually hot conditions has taken it's toll on the snow quality, although the quantity is still more than a good year in Australia. Hopefully we will get some snow to freshen up the cover before we leave.

We spent a bit of time getting our hire skis, lift tickets etc. but headed out on the mountain at around 10:30. From our condo it is a short ski thru a tunnel under a road to the 'Bullet Express'. The village is about a third the way up the mountain and the Bullet almost reaches the top of the mountain, so it is a fair lift ride.

Understandably, Lorraine and Diane wanted to take it easy and explore the green runs. Clive and I were happy to tag along for the day hoping to get the girls up to speed. It's fair to say, the green runs here are decidedly tougher than a green run back home. This caught both Lorraine and Diane out at the top of the mountain for the first run of the day. They both tentatively made their way down a few times before deciding to have a break. Clive and I took the opportunity to explore the rest of the mountain where we did a reconnaissance of all the green runs. There are one or two green runs that have no right to be rated green.

Armed with this information we met up with the girls again for the last hour or so and took them to Big White's signature green run, Serwa's. This run is around 3-4 kms long, goes up, down, all around and near the finish travels along a road where units stand with the ultimate ski in/ski out access. The run is 1 metre from their door!!

All in all it was a great first day. Both Lorraine and Diane skied much better in the afternoon and no doubt will find their feet soon enough. Both of them are keen to get to Serwa's run first thing in the morning.

No pictures of the ski runs today, I will get the camera out tomorrow providing the weather holds up and supply some snow pics.

Never fear however, I have a few pics of....

The propeller powered plane we flew from Seattle to Kelowna....

The view of the village from our condo window....

The view uphill of the run from our condo window....

Relaxing in the jacuzzi at the end of a hard day's skiing....

Yep, no doubt about it, it's a tough life over here in Canada......

Hey guys,
Snow looks good. Hey Mum, I bet you weren't too impressed with the little plane. Looks like "the twins" are enjoying the spa!!!

Keep skiing those mountains. Looking forward to seeing some "on the mountain" pictures & video.

Glad to see Karmen finally worked out how to leave a comment.

Spoke with Pauline today and she says hi.

The kids are fine. Everyone here is healthy and fine. Casey has cleaned out and re-arranged my pantry... something I have been planning to do for a while.

Love to you all

Hi Everyone

Glad you enjoyed your first day on the snow. Although not being up on ski talk I have no idea what a green run is but I am guessing it is an easier slope ? Maybe you can post pictures of a green run so I have an idea :-)

I had to laugh at Casey's description of you guys because that is the image I saw too... maybe lose the beanies guys.

Hope you NEVER have to report broken bones, but the aching muscles and weary bodies just tell us how much fun you are having.

Have another great one tomorrow
Sue

P.S Anthony, Amanda and Adam have been following your blog and say Hi, and glad your having a good time.

Hi All,
Well it all looks certainly, decidedly cooooold. Sounds like your first day of skiing was enjoyed by all. We are here in sunny QLD with Chris & Vicki looking out at the magnificent Coolangatta Beach a far cry from your view but still beautiful all the same. Very hot here and obviously veerrry cold there.
Keep on enjoying and we will do the same.
